Benefits of Mulethi

Some spices and herbs from our granny’s stockpot are so precious that till date they continue to be used in everyday home remedies. One such age-old herb that has been used for its exceptional health-promoting properties is mulethi. Mulethi is commonly known as liquorice. It has been used for centuries, especially in Ayurveda. It has good taste and so apart from medicines it is widely used as a flavouring agent in most places and makes it a delicacy. Mulethi has anti-diabetic and anti-oxidant properties, supports liver health, and also has expectorant and decongestant that helps fight respiratory infections. It is believed that liquorice in small amounts can be used to decrease sugar cravings.

Combats respiratory infections

Chewing on mulethi sticks is an age-old remedy for a sore throat. Due to its expectorant and bronchodilator properties, it can treat asthma, cough, cold, sore throat and bronchitis. Mulethi loosens the mucus inside the airways, this eases coughing and congestion. If you don’t want to chew mulethi sticks, you can mix ginger juice to mulethi tea in order to soothe asthma and bronchial infection.

Regular use of mulethi is known to improve, immunity which is due to the increase in the production of macrophage and lymphocytes and enzymes present in the plant root. Macrophage and lymphocytes protect the body from microbes, pollutants, allergens, and cells that cause autoimmune diseases. Keeps infections and allergies at bay and in turn boosts your immunity.

Combats digestive issues

The root of mulethi is very helpful in curing digestive problems like acid reflux, inflammation of the stomach, heartburn, acidity and constipation. It has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which help reduce inflammation in the lining of the stomach.

The phytoestrogenic compounds in this herb help correct hormonal imbalance in the body to ease menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, insomnia, depression, mood swings, sweating etc.

An extracted form of mulethi has proven the ability to reduce and protect against liver diseases such as hepatitis C, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and jaundice. Additionally, it has anti-inflammatory properties which help soothe the liver during hepatitis. Mixing mulethi in a warm cup of tea twice a day for a couple of weeks can purify the liver and make it immune to diseases.
