Vata Pacifying Tips

In Ayurveda, every season is associated with a dosha. Vata dosha is related to winter, the windy winters tend to increase vata. The word vata means to blow or move like a wind. Vata consists of elements like air and ether, it is one of the doshas that mainly governs the movements in the body and activities of the nervous system. If your vata is healthy, the movements of the body are graceful, unhindered and yet is in balance. When it goes out of balance, the movements become inconsistent, immoderate or jammed.

Ayurveda has many approaches to bring vata dosha in balance. Be it diet changes, herbs, aromas, massage oils or lifestyle, the principles used to return to balance are the same. One of the essential lifestyle tools for maintaining health and for supporting healing in the vata individual is the adoption of regular healthy schedules that are in harmony with the rhythms of nature. Stability is greatly improved through eating and sleeping at the same times every day. 

Learn a few great ways to keep your vata balanced.

STAY CALM

Firstly, keep calm and be regular with your daily routine. So make a plan – follow your ayurvedic schedule the night before and wake up fresh, and be ready to overcome all the hurdles coming your way. It is recommended, you should drink a glass of warm milk mixed with cardamom powder. Be stress-free and take up all the challenges coming your way.

EAT WARM NOURISHING MEALS REGULARLY

Keeping in line with the routine that craves, one should eat fresh warm meals at regular mealtimes each day. If we could avoid the tendency to eat even a light lunch even on the busiest days, we can calm down the flighty nature of Vata. Warm, nourishing, cooked foods help you stay grounded. Avoid light, dry, cold and pungent foods and favour warm, oily, heavy foods and sweet, sour and salty tastes. Take larger quantities of food at lunch, but keep a check on your capacity to digest the food.   

KEEP YOURSELF HYDRATED AND STAY WARM

Pay good attention to keeping yourself hydrated. Avoid cold or iced drinks and sip warm water at regular intervals. Avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee and black tea. When it’s frosty outside or the temperature drops you can sip a soothing cup of tea which will settle your whirling mind and will raise the body’s temperature from inside. Wear proper warm clothes and lit up heaters to keep you warm at home. When you go outside pile on the layers and keep yourself warm.

STICK WITH LIGHT EXERCISE

Exercise enhances balance and flexibility in your body. Yoga asanas, exercises, massage helps loosen joints and muscles and releases nervous tension. This makes yoga asanas the ideal non-strenuous exercise for vata. Ayurveda says, putting a little attention towards the area of sensation while practicing asanas has a balancing effect. Meditation calms down our mind, balances our body and creates a sense of feeling grounded.

RELAX WELL

All above routines at the end require proper rest. Have you ever realized that after a long day when you lie down at night, you find that an overactive stream of thoughts doesn’t allow you to sleep? To promote a peaceful good night’s sleep, one should dim the lights in your room, and you can read a book, or listen to some relaxing music or enjoy some light-hearted conversation with your dear ones before bed. Ayurveda suggests eating dinner at least three hours before bed; it calms our mind and allows sleeping soundly.
