Ayurvedic Tips for Speedy Recovery from Viral Fever

Mon, May 29, 23

Viral fevers and infections have become more and more common nowadays. A simple change in climate and a rise in temperature can be the very cause of viral fever. These infections are mostly triggered by airborne infections that we get from an infected person.

Viral infections can have symptoms such as cold, cough, flu, mild fever, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, etc.

There are many ways that you can contact a viral fever-

  • By inhaling infected droplets released during coughing or sneezing by an ill person.
  • By consuming contaminated foods or drinks.
  • Some carriers such as insects and animals can also carry viruses.

Ayurvedic Perspective of Viral Fever and Infections

According to Ayurveda, all individuals have three Doshas in their body i.e- Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Any imbalance in the three Doshas of the body can cause illnesses.

Fever in Ayurveda is termed as Jwara Roga. This is mainly caused due to an imbalance in the Vata and Kapha Doshas. An imbalance in Kapha can cause cold symptoms and excess of Vata often reduces the digestive fire causing chills, fatigue, weak digestion and body pains.

Every disease starts from Ama (Digestive Toxin) which leads to an imbalance of Dhatus (Bodily Tissues). This weakens the primordial immunity of our body (Ojas) and our body becomes more and more prone to infections and allergies.

So, Ayurveda aims at balancing the Agni (Digestive Fire) and Doshas in the body to protect our bodies from viral infections and fever.

There are three different types of fevers in Ayurveda-

Vata Fevers- These usually arrive in the monsoon season and can cause racing pulse, great thirst, body aches and pains, and fluctuating body temperatures. The diet includes a lot of water and warm soups. Make a decoction of Sudarshan churan and Guduchi.

Pitta Fevers-Pitta fever is caused due to an aggravated Pitta Dosha. These have symptoms such as a burning forehead, high fever, bad-smelling sweat, loose motions and nausea. It is recommended to take fruits such as musk melon, sweet lime (mausumbi) and drink lemon water with sugar. Make decoctions of kutki and chandanadi.

Kapha Fevers-These are caused due to an imbalance in the Kapha Dosha. It can cause blocked sinuses, heaviness and congestion. To relieve the upper respiratory system, it is recommended to drink lots of warm water and fluids, take kadha made from tulsi, ginger, pepper and avoid Kapha aggravating foods such as curd, ghee etc.
